#16 Oak Avenue Gouache, acrylic, cut and torn paper mounted on paper 23 x 18_ 2018.jpg

Michigan Fine Arts Competition

June 22 - August 23, 2018

A recent drawing, #16 (Oak Avenue), will be in this exhibit which opens June 22, 2018. #16 is one of a recent series of drawings that explore arcing and curved lines, circles or half-circles, rectangles, plumb lines, overlapping and intersecting edges where one form meets another somewhat off-kilter. In this work, I wanted to approach the idea of repetition as directly as possible. So I set out to remake the same thing, and do it more than once. I seem to have hit a nerve, or a basic assumption, which goes something like, An artist never repeats herself. To test this notion, I remade parts of drawings like the one shown here, arranging them in new ways, each time coming up with a different composition. I've always been attracted to bright, saturated color, and transparency, where brush strokes are left on the surface, and not covered up. The Michigan Fine Arts Competition will be held at the Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center, 1516 S. Cranbrook Road, Birmingham MI 48009.
